Love this quote by Chekhov. The first of the quote is "telling" the story, while the second part is "showing." Way more moody, interesting and puts you right there into the scene.

Don't bore your readers with unnecessary information. If you have "back story" try to weave it into the main plot. Cut out unnecessary adjectives ... we already know she's brave because you told us she protected her children even if it meant losing her life.
